Morning All,
Today, I have Jonathan Gould, the author of Magnus Opum answering a few questions for us:

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
There’s a bunch of reasons:
There’s a bunch of reasons:
- I’m not tall enough to be a basketballer
- I could never be an actor because I giggle when it’s my turn to say my bit
- I’m afraid of heights, so pilot or astronaut were both out
- My cooking prowess doesn’t go much beyond spaghetti, rice, and toast and vegemite, so I guess I was never going to be a master chef
- I’m kind of good at making stuff up
How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
This is going to sound really boring. I was actually at work. The purchaser was another work colleague. She wasn’t in the same city as me so she told me by email. We couldn’t even run and whoop around the office together. Then again, it wasn’t exactly the sort of office where running and whooping was encouraged.
If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
That’s easy – I’d really love to have an autographed copy of Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy because Douglas Adams was a real inspiration to me. Hang on a minute – I do have one. Lucky me.
How do you react to a bad review?
I hide in my little room with the lights out and I don’t come out for days. Seriously, I’ve been pretty lucky with reviews and mostly they’ve been amazingly great. When I have got some bad ones, I just tell myself that my book was obviously not right for them. And at least nobody’s torn my writing apart or told the world that my books are full of errors.
What was your favorite book when you were a child?
The first book I ever read was Go Dog Go by P.D. Eastman. It’s a classic. Dog. Big Dog. Big Dogs and Little Dogs. Black and white dogs. Come to think of it, I didn’t actually read it – I just memorised the whole thing. One of the best things about becoming a parent was being able to introduce this gem of literature to my kids. I tell you, it never gets old.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Because if you don’t read it, then I guess you’ll never know.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Way too much of myself. Sometimes it seems like my stories are really just me trying to figure out what is going on in the world. Mind you, I’m not sure I can keep it up too much longer. My characters are starting to complain and telling me to leave them alone so they can be themselves for a change.
